I awoke to the speedy hiss of rain water running down my window in torrents. I sat up, forgetting there was another bed bunk above me. As I hobbled around the apartment clutching my splitting head I noticed a note pinned to the door with a small red thumbtack.
I tore the paper from the door with my left hand and read the yellowed note aloud, “Bills due today.” I crumpled up the note and shuddered, send a small cold chill down from my scalp, dispersing throughout my back and stopping at my kneecap.
